Dry Ice
Dry ice is carbon dioxide in its solid form. At a temperature of minus 109.3 °F (minus 78.5 °C), dry ice is excellent for keeping items frozen when a freezer is not available or as a supplement to extending the life of liquid ice. Blocks of dry ice are commonly used in freezers during power outages to reduce food spoilage. In the food and medical industry dry ice is used to ship frozen foods, medical supplies and samples. Take special care to avoid any direct skin contact and use heavy gloves when handling dry ice.
In addition to the more commonly known uses for dry ice, it has been successfully used in many other ways including:
Eradicating borrowing animals such as moles, woodchucks and gophers. Push a small piece (1 to 2 inches) into the hole and then cover the entrance with dirt. Due to its unique properties the dry ice will find its way to the bottom of the borrow.
Mosquito Traps: Most commercial mosquito traps expel CO2, the same gas we expel when we breathe. This gas is what attracts the mosquitoes to humans as well as these machines. People have used dry ice to mimic this attraction. As the CO2 enters the air, mosquitoes are attracted to the ice and not to you!
Dry ice is fantastic for removing laminate. Spread pellets over the desired area and allow the ice to sit for approximately a half hour. Then use a putty knife to pry up the laminate leaving the old surface below!
Dry ice is sold by the pound at the Summit Ice House in block or pellet form. There is a 50 lb. minimum order quantity on all dry ice orders. Please place all dry ice orders one week in advance.
